KEAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS RESOLUTION November 12, 2003 |

The KFT membership condemns as reckless and incoherent the unprecedented action by the Farahi administration to dismiss non-tenured faculty on a massive scale. The dismissals represent nearly 40% of all untenured faculty, and almost 10% of the permanent full-time faculty. Action on such a scale calls into question the Administration's claims to an academic basis for these firings, contradicts President Farahi's previous promises to avoid layoffs, and , in not providing previous notice, represents a radical departure from the University's established standards and expectations for professional performance. This action by the Farahi administration invalidates and devalues Kean's long standing practice of meaningful peer review. As KFT members, we see these dismissals as nothing more than an act of managerial intimidation. Such intimidation is certain only to chase quality non-tenured faculty back into the job market and to discourage quality applicants - faculty, professional staff and librarians – from applying to future job searches at Kean. We lament the incalculable damage – and considerable expense – of this action to the University. We call upon President Farahi and the Board of Trustees to rectify this injustice. |
